ASU NEW EMPLOYEE SAFETY TRAINING   

The Safety & Workers Compensation Office welcomes you, the new employee, to Appalachian State University.  It’s our hope the information you acquire from our website will, at the end of the day, help you make it home in the same condition you came to work…… uninjured.  Remember, health and safety compliance is the responsibility of every employee in each campus department, starting on the first day of work.

 New Employee Safety Orientation

The “New Employee Safety Orientation” is required training for all new staff and faculty.   This “online” version of our “live” New Employee Safety Orientation is presented for those new staff and faculty that are unable to attend the classroom orientation.  We prefer having the opportunity to meet you face to face during the New Employee Classroom Orientation Program hosted by Human Resource Services.  The HRS Classroom orientation is conducted the first Wednesday of each month from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm in Room 129 (Training Room) of Founders Hall. 

By no means will this online presentation address every safety and health topic applicable to the working environment at ASU.  However, it will provide pertinent information that will help us in the pursuit of our goals:

• Reach all of our new staff and faculty.
• Provide a standard safety orientation training program consistent with North Carolina Occupational Safety & Health (NCOSH) requirements and Appalachian State University safety policies and procedures.
• Orient new employees to use appropriate safety & health procedures in their respective work areas, thus improving safe practices campus wide

Safety Requirements for New Employees

Because of the type of work they do, some ASU employees are required to have annual hearing tests and/or are required to wear safety shoes.

Using the “Safety Requirements for New Employees” tables, you can look up your department and job classification to see if you qualify for hearing tests and/or safety shoes.  You or your supervisor can print, complete, sign and send in the required sign-off sheet as needed.
